Bio

Faranak Nateghi (she/her)

I am a master’s student in the FilmMemory program, focusing on film heritage and archival practices. This master’s takes place in four different countries, so I am currently on the move with a fluid state of residency.

I look for traces of my country’s lost film history in my research, videos, and film archives. I experiment with video-making through personal narration of pre-existing materials. Archival materials are my words to convey the irrepresentable!

Moving between theory and practice, personal and political history, I try to question how suppressed narratives can be reimagined.

Focus Areas for Exploration

I am curious about the concept of geography in shaping memory and how it can be related to forms of neo-colonialism in today’s world and different kinds of art production, especially their circulation. How deep, unknown, and internalized this exploitation of artists and filmmakers is, and how it can be addressed in the form of artwork or research.

The idea of being productive through generating work in textual form interests me deeply, and so does a kind of collective experience in the form of resistance. In a world where institutions govern production and criticism, I imagine this program will empower independent voices to stand out more solidly.
